Economic Competitiveness of Bioenergy Production and Effects on Agriculture of the Southern Region AgEcon
English, Burton C.; Torre Ugarte, Daniel de la; Walsh, Marie E.; Hellwinckel, Chad M.; Menard, R. Jamey.
The economic competitiveness of biobased industries is discussed by comparing the South relative to other regions of the United States and biomass as a feedstock source relative to fossil fuels such as coal and petroleum. An estimate of the biomass resource base is provided. Estimated changes in the agricultural sector over time resulting from the development of a large-scale biobased industry are reported, and a study on the potential to produce electricity from biomass compared with coal in the southern United States is reviewed. A biobased industry can increase net farm income and enhance economics development and job creation.

Ecosystemes benthiques profonds et chimiosynthese bacterienne: Sources hydrothermales et suintements ArchiMer
Laubier, Lucien.
Hydrothermal communities of various species compositions have been described from the eastern and western Pacific and Atlantic. Brine and cold seeps and hydrocarbon seepages have been found off Florida, off the Oregon and Japanese subduction systems, on the Laurentian Fan, near Barbados, and off Louisiana. Biomasses range from 10 to 70 kg/m super(2), fresh weight. Basic microdistribution of species groups in aureoles centered around hydrothermal vents reveals different levels of adaptation to harsh physico-chemical conditions. Two groups of primary producers can be recognized: a highly efficient cool water group with large vestimentiferan tube worms and bivalves, and alvinellid polychaetes adapted to hot waters. Both groups are exploited by specific...

Effect of Brachionus rubens on the growth characteristics of various species of microalgae Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Abou,Reda A.I; Singh,Manjinder; Rivera-Cruz,Anangelica; Power,Grace; Bagby-Moon,Thomas; Das,Keshav.
Background: Cultivation of algae for conversion to biofuels has gained global interest. Outdoor raceway cultivation is preferred because of its lower capital and operating costs. A major disadvantage of outdoor cultivation is susceptibility of algal crops to attack by predatory rotifers. In order to quantify the impact of rotifer attack on different species of algae, we evaluated the growth of eleven microalgal species over a 21-d period after being infected by the predatory rotifer Brachionus rubens. Results: Of the eleven species, Chlorella sorokiniana was the most susceptible with rapid decline in algal growth concomitant with increase in rotifer population growth (3.82/d). In contrast, Synechococcus elongatus andScenedesmus dimorphus were both...

Abbas,Zafar; Akmal,Muhammad; Khan,Khalid Saifullah; Fayyaz-ul-Hassan,.
The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of bromoxynil herbicide on soil microorganisms, with the hypothesis that this herbicide caused suppression in microbial activity and biomass by exerting toxic effect on them. Nine sites of Punjab province (Pakistan) those had been exposed to bromoxynil herbicide for about last ten years designated as soil 'A' were surveyed in 2011 and samples were collected and analyzed for Microbial Biomass Carbon (MBC), Biomass Nitrogen (MBN), Biomass Phosphorus (MBP) and bacterial population. Simultaneously, soil samples from the same areas those were not exposed to herbicide designated as soil 'B' were taken. At all the sites MBC, MBN and MBP ranged from 131 to 457, 1.22 to 13.1 and 0.59 to 3.70 µg g-1 in the contaminated...

Effect of prescribed fre on forage production and nutritive value of the perennial grass Saccharum griffithii Phyton
Gul,B; Islam,M; Ahmad,S; Gul,S.
The effect of fre on growth and nutritive value of Saccharum griffithii Munro ex Boiss-ravennae (Linn.) Murr. hybrid, a low palatable perennial grass in the semi-arid region of the highlands of Balochistan, Pakistan, was evaluated during 2008 and 2009. Prescribed fire treatments were applied in February 2008 and 2009 at the dormant stage of vegetation. Different growth parameters (tiller height, tiller number/plant), forage production (fresh, dry) and nutritive value (crude protein, ash) were compared with control (unburnt) plots. Fire increased the number of tillers, and the fresh and dry forage production in both years. Fire also improved the crude protein contents. Prescribed fire at the dormant stage of vegetation can be used as a vegetation tool to...

Effects of culture conditions on the production of inulinase by Kluyveromyces marxianus BABT
Cazetta,Marcia Luciana; Monti,Rubens; Contiero,Jonas.
The present study was conducted to investigate the influence of initial sucrose concentration, pH and aeration rate on biomass and inulinase production by Kluyveromyces marxianus var. bulgaricus in a stirred batch reactor. Maximum inulinase activity (15.29 UmL-1) was obtained at a sucrose concentration of 10 g L-1, pH 5.0 and aeration rate of 1 vvm. The 20 g L-1 sucrose concentration was suitable for cell growth; however, enzymatic activity at this concentration was inhibited due to catabolic repression. The increase in aeration rate caused a reduction in enzyme activity with no relevant biomass increase.

Effects of Sodium Nitrate and Mixotrophic Culture on Biomass and Lipid Production in Hypersaline Microalgae Dunaliella Viridis Teod BABT
Kharati-Koupaei,Mansour; Moradshahi,Ali.
To access the potential application of Dunaliella viridis Teod. for biofuel production, the effects of culture media composition on biomass and lipid content of this microalgae were investigated. Measured at the 20 th day, sodium nitrate at 5.0 mM augmented biomass production by 26.5 percent compared to control (1 mM sodium nitrate). Total lipids expressed as µg mL-1 of culture also increased with increase in nitrate concentration up to 5.0 mM sodium nitrate, whereas when expressed on the per cell basis, total lipids stayed relatively constant at most of the tested nitrate concentrations except at 0.5 mM which was 31.4 percent higher compared to 1.0 mM nitrate. At 5.0 mM sodium nitrate, by using 20 g L-1 of glucose in mixotrophic culture of D. viridis,...

El modelo sistémico para la fertilización nitrogenada en brócoli (Brassica oleracea itálica). Colegio de Postgraduados
Cartagena Ayala, Yamil Everaldo.

Dufour, P.; Cremoux, Jl.; Slepoukha, M..
"In vitro" enrichment experiments on natural populations have been used to determine the nutrients controlling the potential biomass of phytoplancton in the Ebrié coastal lagoon. The limiting nutrients were generally nitrogen, phosphorus and carbon, in this order ; in three cases out of eleven, P and N act simultaneously ; in an extreme eutrophication case, N, P and C were all limiting. No effect was observed following addition of metals, vitamins or chelators. The limitations deduced from the enrichment experiments show a. good agreement with the elementary composition of the external medium ; in waters potentially limited by N alone, the dissolved inorganic nutrients have a N : P ratio lower than 25. The agreement is poorer when the sestonic N : P ratio...

Elevage de copepodes harpacticoïdes (Tisbe holothuriae) en cycle complet. Rôle des facteurs température et nutrition ArchiMer
Gaudy, R.; Guerin, J.p..
Following are results obtained in our laboratory during breeding experiments with an harpacticoid copepod, Tisbe holothuriae. In small size volumes (200 ml), the potential production appears to be higher when an artificial compound food of animal substances is used instead of a vegetal diet. In medium volume experiments (100 l) the production is related to the surface available for animals in breeding tanks, Breeding in complete cycles can be obtained using various foods, but the quality of diet may markedly affect the characteristics of the vital cycle, such as the length of the fertility period and fecundity. Temperature has a crucial effect, chiefly on dynamic preoccesses, that is to say, developmental rate and average generation time. With different...
